Music

Music plays a central role in the life of the School, from the Early Learning Centre through to Year 12 and the VCE. Gippsland Grammar acknowledges the important role music has in developing the mind, aesthetic responses and cultural diversity, and its ability to develop responsibility and a team ethic in young people. Scroll down for the 'Music Tuition Online Application'.

Students in the Junior School at St Anne's and Bairnsdale campuses have the opportunity to explore musical instruments through our Year 2 String and Year 4 Band programs, whilst our team of exciting, dedicated instrumental teachers offers individual instrumental and vocal lessons to students throughout the school. In addition, both campuses offer opportunities for students to take their music further through participation in school-based ensembles and choirs. There is a program of early evening soirees which give our young musicians the opportunity to experience, and grow in confidence, in performing in public.

Playing an instrument or singing leads to participation in one or more of our co-curricular ensembles, with the School encouraging participation in ensembles as an important outcome of learning an instrument. At our Garnsey Campus, our ensembles have a program of regular weekly rehearsals as well as two major weekend music camps, usually held at Rawson Village, along with at least two major concerts each year. These are held in mid-May and mid-October and known as the Autumn and Spring Concerts and celebrate the musical achievements of our ensembles. In addition, there is a substantial program of lunchtime and evening concerts and master-classes with invited teachers.

Our major ensembles based at the Garnsey campus are the Sinfonietta, a string orchestra, two concert bands named after prominent Australian musicians Percy Code and Dulcie Holland, and the School choir. There are also a number of smaller ensembles which include the SChoir, an auditioned vocal ensemble, saxophone, clarinet and percussion ensembles as well as Boys vocal group known as Boys2Men. More advanced students from our St Anne’s Campus are from time to time invited to participate in ensembles based at the Garnsey Campus. Recently, developing chamber music has become a new development, focussing on very small ensembles providing an opportunity for advanced students to work at the most sophisticated levels of music making.

Music at Gippsland Grammar is challenging and exciting, and offers students the opportunity to be part of a stimulating environment, one in which they experience the thrill of making music together, sharing their talents with others and above all, having a lot of fun.
